Dr Nicole Ferdinand & Dr Rosa Codina - Making International Events Management Inclusive
Dr. Nicole Ferdinand is passionate about making the hospitality, events, and tourism industries more inclusive. As Programme Lead for Postgraduate Hospitality, Events, and Tourism at the Oxford School of Hospitality Management, she’s shaping future industry leaders. With a PhD in Culture, Media, and the Creative Industries from King’s College London, her research explores how politics and identity shape festivals and cultural events—key themes that resonate in the music industry. Now, as Associate Dean of Postgraduate Studies at Oxford Brookes Business School, she’s driving forward the SHAPE agenda, highlighting the social and economic impact of the creative industries. Whether examining the cultural power of music festivals or advocating for diverse voices in events, Nicole is deeply concerned about inclusion and representation issues in the creative industries and wider society.
Dr Rosa Codina is a Senior Lecturer in Events and Tourism Management at Oxford Brookes University. She teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the subjects of tourism impact analysis, global events operations, global events and society, and co-leads qualitative research seminars for PhD students at the Business School.
Rosa’s research focuses on the socio-cultural and political impacts of tourism and events in the Global South, with an emphasis on host communities and historically underrepresented groups. Her work examines the experiences of women and other underrepresented individuals in the tourism industry, as well as the influence of tourism and events on gender norms and values. She is particularly interested in working with communities affected by tourism and event development.
Rosa earned her PhD from Oxford Brookes University, where she conducted an ethnographic study on the role of tourism in shaping local power dynamics in Pisac, Peru. Her research critically examined how tourism influences community relationships, with a specific focus on women and those with limited influence in local decision-making.
